A prominent figure within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has expressed strong support for the party’s decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria, describing the move as a strategic step toward fairness, unity, and national reconciliation.

The endorsement came during the party’s national convention held on Saturday, where delegates formally affirmed the zoning arrangement. The decision positions the South to produce the next presidential candidate of the party for a single four-year term, in line with internal power-sharing considerations.

Zoning decision aimed at balance and unity

Speaking at the convention, Kwankwaso noted that the zoning arrangement reflects the principle of equity within the party and provides what he described as a “necessary opportunity for national healing.” According to him, allowing the South to complete its turn in the leadership rotation strengthens trust within the party and reinforces Nigeria’s broader democratic balance.

He emphasized that as a committed party member, he fully aligns with the resolution, stressing the importance of unity and discipline in implementing internal agreements.

Kwankwaso stated that the decision is not just political but symbolic, reinforcing fairness and inclusiveness in leadership distribution across regions.

Commitment to party discipline and federal character

Reaffirming his loyalty to the party’s structure, the former Kano State governor pledged to abide by the zoning arrangement and support its full implementation.

He highlighted that the NDC must consistently uphold fairness and federal character principles in all its political decisions, noting that such adherence would help restore confidence in governance and strengthen democratic institutions.

Kwankwaso added that the leadership standards set by the party through this decision would play a major role in restoring Nigeria’s dignity both locally and internationally.

Call for voter participation and mobilisation

The NDC chieftain also used the occasion to urge increased political participation among citizens, calling on supporters to take advantage of voter registration exercises conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He encouraged party members and supporters to actively mobilise across communities, stressing that voter registration and participation remain key to achieving the party’s political ambitions.

According to him, building a strong democratic system requires active engagement from citizens who are willing to “register, vote, and belong” to a political movement that reflects their aspirations.

Broader implications for the NDC

The zoning endorsement is seen as a significant moment for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, as it attempts to strengthen internal cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections in Nigeria.

Political observers note that such zoning arrangements often play a critical role in managing regional balance and reducing internal party tensions in Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.

Kwankwaso’s public backing is expected to reinforce party unity and may influence other stakeholders within the NDC to align with the zoning consensus as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
